Mothers of Creation Rural Tourism Route
The Mothers of Creation Rural Tourism route is inspired by rural women who are opening their homes and hearts to tourists. Their homestay accommodation is situated in beautiful natural forests, mountains and agricultural areas of the Garden Route.
Accommodation
This is a different experience which will require you to put yourself in the shoes of your hosts and rough it! Leave behind running water, electricity, flushing toilets and preconceived ideas. Choose the excitement of the unknown and the opportunity to share the reality of other people’s lives.
Toilet facilities: The majority of the toilets are long drops (outside toilets with either a bucket or a large open hole beneath the toilet). Towel: Although it is not necessary for all homestays, it is suggested that own towels are taken. Linen: Linen is provided at the majority of the establishments however, confirm this when making reservations. Water: Some of the establishments do not have running water inside the homestays.
Meals
Meals served are the traditional food your hosts' eat themselves. The local people take pride in their cooking and visitors will definitely leave feeling well-fed. Should you prefer vegetarian meals, the ladies will gladly oblige. The majority of the communities have their own vegetable gardens and they pride themselves on their ability to grow their vegetables organically.
How to book a stay
As the communities are generally quite a distance from established towns, your hosts need at least 48 hours notice to prepare for your stay. Contact them directly on the number given. You won't be able to book online or via e-mail.
How to get to your accommodation
As far as possible, directions are supplied for most communities and local establishments. However, once you arrive in the community, locals can usually give you further directions.

Lake Superior Backpackers
Situated on the main road, Lake Superior is just a hop, skip and jump from Knysna’s waterfront, restaurants, pubs and shops.
A great way to start the days is with breakfast on the deck with its awesome view of the Knysna Heads. Early evenings are best spent with a sundowner drink around the fire. Our chef cooks up yummy African specialities you have to try like potjiekos and crab that will fill you up before a night on the town.

Travellers Lodge Knysna
Travellers Lodge is a cosy home away from home lodge in the heart of Knysna. The lodge has comfortable rooms in African style decor with fresh bedding and towels supplied daily. It is close to all amenities and transport and at a walking distance to waterfront. All adventure tours offered from the lodge. Self catering fitted kitchen with braai area in a fairytale garden.
The lodge is run by old hands at the backpacking industry who will advise guests on all they need to know about Knysna and the surrounding areas. A laundry service is available and breakfast is served on request.

The adventurous can abseil the gorge, scuba dive a ship wreck or tour the local brewery! Those looking for less heart-stopping fun, stroll to the Waterfront, browse the shops or cruise the lagoon by canoe or ferry.
Then there’s the things everyone likes to do: relaxing on the beach, wandering the forests, slurping oysters and champagne and taking scenic day drives.
Hop in the bus on your first evening for an introductory tour of the Heads - a free beer included. To culminate the day's happenings, frequent one of the many superb restaurants all within easy walking distance .
