Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge
A 4 star lodge at backpacker rates, closest to base of the Amphitheatre. This incredibly dramatic section of the Drakensberg has the largest indigenous forest in the Berg and the largest collection of rock art in the world.
The panoramic view of the high Berg spans around 300 hectares of beautiful trails, rivers and dams. Staying at Amphitheatre Backpackers is a journey in itself – it’s adorned with the best of both modern and traditional African design.
There are artistic stained glass, carvings, metal and wood sculptures, dorms from converted silos and brand new luxury rooms. Indulge yourselves in the rock pool, sauna, bouldering cave and jacuzzi.

Karma Backpackers
Karma is the nearest backpackers to Sentinel Peak and the Amphitheatre hike. Explore Witsieshoek, Royal Natal Park and Golden Gate, all less than an hour away. Climb the famed Chain Ladders, stand above the Tugela Falls, explore Bushman paintings and travel to nearby Lesotho.

Masakala Traditional Guesthouse
Where is Masakala...?
Masakala is a friendly rural village close to Matatiele on the border of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. It offers a stunning view of the Southern Drakensberg and a chance to discover the warm-heartedness of the Sotho and Xhosa people.
Accommodation
Masakala Traditional Guesthouse has two rondavels built following the local architectural style - a circular or square hut with a peaked thatched roof. We have single, double or dormitory accommodation. Traditional yet comfortable, the accommodation has four beautifully decorated rooms, hot showers and a bath. Masakala has been awarded an AA Quality Assurance grading.
Meals
Enjoy a meal prepared by the local catering group - home grown vegetables, fresh produce and African recipes are on the menu, alongside conventional fare. We also cater for vegetarians on request.

Community Tourism in action
Mehloding Community Tourism Trust represents more than 25 villages in the area. The Trust owns Masakala Traditional Guesthouse and a nearby adventure trail. Employees of Masakala Guesthouse live within 5km of the establishment. Staff training includes first aid, housekeeping and tour guiding. Masakala purchases goods and services within an 8 km radius and has an organic vegetable garden. Soil and water conservation is practiced on site and recycling is done wherever possible. Tour guides teach herders to identify and preserve rock art. Masakala aims to educate locals regarding the preservation and sustainable harvesting of indigenous medicinal plants. Established in 1992 on a farm bordering the Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site, Sani Lodge is a unique and tranquil retreat surrounded by awesome mountains.
Trails into the wilderness start from the doorstep. Inkosana Lodge
The lodge. The lodge is set in lovely indigenous gardens with a great vibe and views of the mountains. We have a pool, herb garden and yellow wood walk. We serve excellent meals with fresh farm bread.
The valley. This is the home of the Drakensberg Boy’s Choir. There are also arts and crafts, a bakery, a birds of prey centre, horse riding, river rafting in summer, mountain biking, golf and Bushman paintings.
The mountains. The highest peaks in the Drakensberg are here. Day walks to Nandi's Falls, Blind Man's Corner, Makhulamani Forest, Sterkhorn Peak(2950m) and Champagne Castle(3300m). Hike overnight to the highest points in South Africa - Mafadi Peak(3500m) and Injisuthi (3400m).
